Longman and Broderip cello, made in London c.1785. This instrument has a lustrous gold varnish and style of purfling consistent with English work of 18th century London. Its back features attractive maple wood and it bears its original brand just below the button. This cello has a fine, mature tone which projects well in the opening of the Elgar cello concerto, performed by Raphael Wallfisch in the above video. Raphael explores its rich pallate of tonal colours in several further cello works, concluding with an excerpt of unaccompanied Bach.
