This cello was awarded to Auguste Tolbecque by the Conservatoire National de Musique, Paris 1849, as described by a decorative inscription on the ribs. Tolbeque went on to premier Saint-Saens’ first cello concerto in 1873. This instrument has a very powerful and responsive tone, more recently having been performed on by Raphael Wallfish.
