Francois worked for Silvestre in Lyons, Daniel in Marseille, and Bonnel in Rouen. After serving in Crimea in 1855 during the Franco-Prussian war, he apparently adopted the name “Malakoff”. This late 19th century cello is signed by the maker internally and has a certificate of authenticity by Jean-Jacques Rampal, Paris.
