ENGLISH CELLO by HENRY LOCKEY HILL
A fine Stradivari-model with a handsome one-piece maple back, this cello was made in London around 1815. The varnish is a rich golden-orange colour, and the tone is warm, mellow and even. Certificate of authenticity by J & A Beare Ltd.

FRENCH CELLO by GAND FRERES
This decorated cello dates from 1862, the same year that its maker was awarded the "Chevalier de la Legion d'Honneur". A dedication to its first owner, bordered by gold leaf foliage, adorns the back. Stunning varnish and a powerful tone makes for a vibrant combination of colour and sound.

FRENCH CELLO by JOSEPH HEL
Made in Lille c.1870, this cello has beautiful boldly-flamed maple for the back, ribs and scroll. The varnish is a rich orange-red colour, and the tone is mature and resonant.

FRENCH CELLO by PIERRE HEL
A bold and powerful-sounding Stradivari-model made in Lille around 1905. This instrument is made with decoratively-figured "birds-eye" maple, and covered with an opulent golden varnish. Sold with a certificate of authenticity by Jean-Jacques Rampal, Paris.

ENGLISH CELLO by BETTS
Branded below the button on the back, "Betts London", this fine instrument dates from around 1790. A rich red varnish glows over the magnificent one piece maple back, and the front is made from a rugged-looking wide grained spruce. The tone is powerful in all registers.

ENGLISH CELLO by THOMAS KENNEDY

Made in London in 1847, this Stradivari-model cello is signed on the lower rib by the maker. It has an attractive two-piece maple back, and a typically rich red-brown varnish which is somewhat craquelled with age. The refined tone has a mellow tenor register and a warm bass.

FRENCH CELLO by ANDREA CASTAGNERI
Made in Paris in 1743, this cello combines a fine selection of wood with a light golden varnish. The tone is warm, mellow, and full of character.

FRENCH CELLO by CHARLES CLAUDOT
Branded by the maker internally, this Stradivari-model cello was made in Mirecourt around 1850. The varnish is a lustrous golden colour, and the tone is rich and velvety. Its compact size would suit a player with a smaller hand.

ENGLISH CELLO by LOCKEY HILL
The Hill family played a significant role in English cello making in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. Lockey continued in the same craft as his father Joseph, but with a model that shows the influence of Amati and suits the smaller hand. This cello dates from around 1790 and has a typical rich golden varnish and a warm tone.

This instrument was made in Mirecourt in 1923. It has a pretty one-piece slab-cut maple back and a strong, vibrant tone. Certificate of authenticity by Jean-Jacques Rampal, Paris.

3/4 SIZE FRENCH CELLO c.1890

A mellow-sounding instrument with a golden-brown varnish, made in around 1890. The Vosgues style is apparent, with a rich patina applied over the maple back and spruce table.
